There is never a shortage of people living in a society that works to maintain the status quo when they have it in them to be great. We’re asked to “groupthink”—foregoing the opportunity to think for yourself and that leads to conformity. We’ve been paralyzed by the notion that we won’t be accepted. Never be afraid to be different instead be afraid that you want to be like everyone else.
Some situations do not require you to transform but to remind yourself about all you truly are before the world taught you to play small or before you decided to hide your uniqueness or tune it down to the level of those intimidated by your uniqueness. The answer is not to tune it down or play by societies rule but to help others see their uniqueness and celebrate it. Continuously question the status quo because by so doing you become better and find better ways of doing things. These kinds of leaders help us to evolve. They help us to improve. They help us to progress. When they hear the phrase, “That’s how we’ve always done it” especially when it is not efficient and effective, they ignore it and find an alternative way.
Underneath the layers of ego and weakness and timidity that we all carry with us—to varying degrees based on how much personal growth work we’ve done—lies gold, of sorts. Don’t cover it. Reconnect to your authentic self and remind yourself about your enoughness. There are nobody and nothing in the entire world that can complete you other than God. Another person’s lack of enoughness should not make you hide your light. You have to realize that all you ever need to overcome and to thrive lies right in you. Don’t go seeking validation from elsewhere. Instead, look inside. If you catch yourself always shrinking be sure it’s not because of what others think but because you are not developing your competence to an excellence level (which of course you should be doing).
Remind yourself of your uniqueness. You are one-of-a-kind. No two people on earth have the same fingerprint. No one can take your place, and you can’t take anyone’s place. Spend time watering your grass; no need to compare if your neighbour’s grass is greener or not. The world today has so many photocopies, so many impersonators, and so many people getting up each day and putting on facades. Social media even makes it worst but remember that God made each of us with unique abilities and the world needs that. The world needs your touch…so learn to embrace who you are.
Remind yourself that you can do whatever you set your mind to if you believe and put in the work. It does no matter how many times your fall, each time pick yourself up and try again. It is one thing to try and it is another to remain dedicated and stay committed against all odds. Say to yourself it is possible and don’t allow fear to make your shrink. Send that email, make that ask, start that business, read that book, enrol for that class, take that trip. You will never know until you try. Remember the story of David and Goliath. David had to break out of the conformity of fear and did so with great courage and faith. He knew what needed to be done, and he refused to join the others who were trembling in their tents. We’re not doing anyone any favours by hiding ourselves from the truth. We can no longer wait to be defined by something, or someone. Today is the time to be defined by yourself. We’re wasting energy that could benefit people, communities, nations and the world. Regularly remind yourself who God has called you to be.
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment,”–Ralph Waldo Emerson.
