You Are Enough

You Are Enough

“What will they say or think of me,” KT asked. Why is that a concern, I responded? You can never stop people from talking about you be it good or bad. However, how you can control how you react when people talk about you.

KT was very concerned that a value she held dearly was not ubiquitous among her peers. She would always convince herself that to stay relevant in her group, she needed to conform instead of staying true to timeless principles and values.  She got to a point where she began to doubt herself and her esteem kept dwindling till it became totally low that she gave in to peer pressure. In psychology, the term self-esteem is used to describe a person’s overall sense of self-worth or personal value. In other words, how much you appreciate and like yourself. Self-esteem is a continuum of 2 extremes. On the one hand, too little self-esteem can leave people feeling defeated or depressed. It can also lead people to make bad choices, fall into destructive relationships, or fail to live up to their full potential.

A grandiose sense of self-esteem, on the other hand, can certainly be off-putting to others and can even damage personal relationships. Self-esteem levels at the extreme high and low ends of the spectrum can be harmful, so ideally, it’s best to strike a balance somewhere in the middle. Various studies have confirmed that self-esteem has a direct relationship with our overall well-being.

Your ‘enoughness’ is what changes the world. The question then becomes, how do I develop healthy self-esteem?  Firstly, you must be nice to yourself and constantly do you. You are graced differently for your own journey so stop comparing yourself to others. Stop putting that kind of pressure on yourself.

No one is perfect as we will all make mistakes at one point or the other in our life. The key is not to allow mistakes to trap you but pick lessons from it and move on.  Celebrate the small wins and keep your focus on only what is within your powers to change.

You need to regularly remind yourself that you are enough and not put yourself under unnecessary pressure. Even if you walk the path alone, provided you stay true to God and your conscience, doing the right thing then, fear not.  You are enough does not mean that you are a final product, complete and finished, all done growing and changing and learning things forevermore. You are enough does not mean that you are all-powerful and perfect, either. You are enough means that you were made to be you, as you are, on purpose.
